Your Bio

Hello, thanks and welcome for dropping in on my photographic portfolio.
I was born in Huntingdon on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire in England. Most of my childhood was spent living in Cornwall in the South West, hence my love of nature and particularly the partly very dramatic landscape. After graduating as a Technical Artist in 1986 I landed in Frankfurt, Germany, now, 23 years and a few grey hairs later I am still in Germany but further down south in Munich, Bavaria.
I suppose the point where I would say that I took photography more seriously was as I bought my first Digital SLR, the Nikon D100, up to this point I had always seen photography as a hobby only worthwhile during a holiday.
My main area of interest is definitely landscape photography, although, as you may see from my growing gallery selection that almost every aspect from architecture to macro or birds to window shopping Primarily though, my goal is to improve my photographic quality to the extent that I hardly need my retouching skills.
I hope that you enjoy what you see, and please, feel free to comment on anything concerning the content, be it positive or negative.

All the best

Doug Stevens

Bavaria, Germany : Almost four years ago I moved with my wife from Frankfurt to Munich in the south of Germany. I was quite excited to be a lot nearer to the Alps and because of this I try to drive the 50-60 kilometers down there whenever I can as it is an area of particular beauty. Lakes, forests, mountains and lots of hiking in the fresh air.

Impressions Of Iceland : After returning from a short trip to Iceland I can only say that I have fallen in love with this Island in the North Atlantic. It is sparsely populated with a variety of landscape and weather conditions that are unique to anywhere on this planet and is nonetheless a part of Europe. The people are friendly, speaking from my own experience, but the reason I went was to get away from everything and enjoy 12 days of waterfalls, geysirs, rugged coastline, volcanic landscapes and bird life. I hope that you all find something among my attempts to capture this relatively small but very beautiful country.

Panoramas : Sometimes a single photo just isn't enough to convey the drama and or beauty of a location. Panorama photography is a lot of fun. Most of the shots here are simply shot from the hand and some using a tripod. The next step will be to buy a panorama head.

Macro & Still Life : Macro photography isn't as easy as some people might imagine, especially if that what you are trying to shoot is alive and moving. In this gallery I will be posting everything that crosses my Macro lens and extension tubes whether it be insects, plants or everyday objects.

Feathered Friends : Of course being a passionate landscape photographer, I come often in contact with animal and birdlife. I'm no expert in this sector by any means, I haven't got the patience to sit and wait for something to happen and maybe have to go home without a decent picture but occasionally you get to witness a scene that you can take a "snapshot" of. Here is a selection of these "snaphots" that I hope will develope further in the future.

Flora & Fauna : Flowers are for a lot of people uninteresting because "anyone" can take pictures of them, but because of this, I find the real challenge is trying to visualise them from a different perspective, with a different light or in Macro detail. I find this very rewarding in particular when the weather is so bad that the only chance to take a picture is to set up a studio atmosphere in the study and shoot some pot plants.

The Spirit Of Scotland : Having lived most of my childhood in the South West of England in Cornwall I find it quite ironic that after living a consequent twenty years abroad in Germany that I now have the first opportunity of touring through this magnificant countryside. I regret having not discovered the Highlands before. But sometimes you see more from a distance and so destiny had it that I must move to Germany visit Scotland it seems. Now I have realised another travel dream and must say that I was totally surprised how much more beautiful the landscape really is, a real paradise for photographers. There is probably no "best" time of year for a visit to Scotland. I think that every season has it's own beauty, my experience in March this year was quite a mixed bag. As I arrived, it was sunny and warm, then the following two days we had quite a bit of snow, after that a mixture of sun, gales, rain and sleet, sometimes all of these conditions within the same afternoon. But exactly this makes Scotland so intriguing, the constantly changing climate and light. I hope that I can convey with an assortment of varied images here, the natural beauty of the west coast of Scotland.

Window Shopping : Going out and buying something that you don't necessarily need is often due to the art of window displays. The slim mannequin showing off her contours in an expensive fur coat or an expensive necklace hanging around the neck of a stuffed pheasant unleash the wish to acquire a piece of happiness. Unfortunately the kick doesn't last long, especially when the bill from the credit card floats through the letterbox at the end of the month.

Places Of Worship : Whenever in a town, one of the most interesting places to visit are always the churches. I myself am not a religious person but find the Architectural and artistic value of such buildings of great interest. Churches are good places for five minutes rest and quiet away from the bustling high streets where everybody is only concerned with shopping. A church offers a cool space away from the extreme heat of a summers day.
